Chapter 13, Part 2
“I wouldn’t worry about that,” I said, “Probably just got into a fight with her boyfriend.”
He started eyeing me then. “What’s up with your voice Benji?” He asked.
Fuck. “Uh… I got punched in the throat by a Troglodyte?”
“That was you?” He asked, eyes going wide.
“Yeah,” I said, coughing a bit. “That was me. I have to go now. I’ll see you.” I said, and left.
“Hardcore.” I heard him say before the door clicked shut behind me. The room here was similar in style to that of a hospital, complete with bland white walls and little placards that didn’t tell you much about the rooms they identified.
It took a bit of wandering around, but I eventually came across a large library, though large didn’t do it justice. This place probably could’ve made the Library of Congress look like a high school library.
Librarians, mages complete with overly-flowy robes, and every kind of creature that would ever need to learn about something could be found perusing the aisles. After a moment of gawking I managed to track down a computer and sat down at it.
After a few minutes of aimless clicking I began remembering why I miss filing cabinets. With a filing cabinet it’s a lot harder to hide files than with a computer. After all, there are only so many hiding places in a metal bin.
Eventually I was able to pull up a catalogue, looking up every reference I could pertaining the Brotherhood. Printout in hand, I set off into the stacks and began my quest for knowledge. It took almost two hours to find everything and another three to read through the various books and files and figure out what I wanted to know. I found this among the stacks, it was written in Italian and contained in a plain manila folder marked simply with my name;
Name: Sir James Daniel Damian
Date Of Birth: 2 March 1491
Date Of Death: 14 July 1601 N/A
Service Dates: 28 December 1511 – 31 September 1522
Journal of Events:
1512: James has shown an incredible devotion to our cause. His tenacity in battle is beyond any other member of the Brotherhood. After cleansing the Vatican, he began a journey across Europe to cleanse it of evil.

1518: James has received another vision! This is better than we could have hoped. His devotion to God and the Brotherhood are just what we need to take the fight to our enemies. He is almost ready to lead.

1520: Sir James was promoted to Knight today, and given the option to lead a small contingent of men on his quest to find Lasher. He refused, saying that the vision God gave him did not include others. This is a potential problem, but I remain hopeful.

1522: James has been lost to us. Samuel Lasher has turned our first hope in hundreds of years into a creature that must be killed. The loss of station and God’s Blessing have shattered the once glorious Knight. All our work, all our training has been for naught.

1571: James and Lasher coordinated an attack on the Brotherhood of Seven. Over 50 vampires met with our blades. Losses were heavy on both sides. All told we lost over 150 Hunters, 10 Knights and over 100 families. Our scouts report that no more than 10 vampires walked away, James among them. Lasher fell in battle.

1575: James has killed his replacement. Another 40 years wasted.

1602: We located James’ new hideaway and burned it to the ground last year. Our troops reported that they hadn’t seen him leave during the fire. End file.

1956: James is not as dead as I’d hoped. I have come to find out that he has been living under our radar all these years by retreating to Ashlyn Bo’s, a neutral territory that neither Department 7 nor the Winter Court can claim. I have instituted a new policy in regards to James. No Department 7 Agent will be placed in active pursuit of James Damian.

1983: We have recieved word that James is now working for an organization with resources on par with ours. His activites will continue to be monitored from afar.
Entered By: Regina DiEstate
1994: I am placing this file into the Department 7 archives. All future entries will be in digital format. End File.

The fact that all the entries were by the same person brought me some pause. If I knew the Brotherhood, and I did, they weren’t big fans of people that lived longer than a human. I was about to make my way back to the computer when I felt an all too familiar prodding sensation in the back of my mind.
I spun around to meet her gaze and the disapproving stare that I knew would be waiting for me on Angel’s face.

Nice chapter but i didn’t know james was a part of the brotherhood before he was turned.
I love that last sentence and can’t wait for him to see that disapproving stare on the next page.
Drake, you should read this bonus story then: http://doberler.com/story/bonus/001b
Glad to see more. I love the story so far and I have missed the updates. Thank you for your work.
Yep Angel can almost burn a hole in your head with just her eyes. And now she knows that James in their head quarters, I think she is going to tear into security for that.
Sweet! An update!
Intrigued by Regina. Love the timeline… though one little niggle. The writing is clearly modern all the way from the beginning, which just seems a little odd when it’s all together in one place like that.
Some typos for your editing pleasure:
“After a few minutes or aimless clicking”
or -> of
“This is a potential problem, but I’m remain hopeful.”
I’m -> I
Well, considering that an immortal may or may not be limited by the flow of time (for example, angels in my fiction world aren’t), it does not surprise me that the writing is modern.
That, or it could have been translated for the benefit of younger generations.
Thanks for all the comments guys, it’s good to be back behind the wheel and writing again.
As for Regina and her modern-sounding script, I’ve edited the story a bit to reflect that Belial was correct, and James is translating it from Italian.
Also, thanks for the typos Sarah, I fixeded those too. ^_^
