Chapter 13, Part 5

I was less than 100 feet from the exit when things started to go wrong. A woman who was walking towards us gave me a look that could only mean she recognized my new-to-me face. When she got close, she said something involving a lot of hissing and clicking.

Not knowing what she said, I could only smile and nod. She stopped me dead in my tracks, one hand shoving against me. Of course, my first thought was ‘Oh shit she caught me.’ Her next action of screaming and running to the exit served to remind me not to have such negative thoughts in a place that employs psychics.

When the alarms began to sound, the two behemoths that guarded the front door stepped into the hallway. The psychic pointed at me and yelled “Intruder!” before ducking into an adjacent room. The guards simply popped their knuckles and began approaching me.

“Wait!” I yelled, throwing my hands up to stop their approach. “It’s come to my attention that I may have an issue with fighting the two of you hand to hand. But because I’m one of the most powerful mages Department 7 has ever had, you’ve got to ask yourself one question.” At that point I lit my hands with lightning. “Do I feel lucky?”

When they restarted their approach I unleashed a torrent that would light them up like the 4th of July. I was excited when it smacked them both in the chest, but not so much when it fizzled weakly and died out.

“Well, I guess you do feel lucky.” I said before turning tail and running.

The guards were quick, but they didn’t have the same ability I did to turn corners so aside from having to blow up bits of flooring to stop the less physically intimidating guards from shooting me, it would just be a matter of time before I could manage to find a way back out the front entrance.

The giants slapped through a set of blinded guards just as I turned a corner and smacked full force into Angel. Angel’s reaction to this was to slide low to the ground as I barreled into her and flip me over her shoulder as she stood back up and whirled around to face me. That was when the realization dawned that her entire team was behind her.

“Great, trapped between two brute squads.” I said from the ground. “Okay, well this wasn’t exactly what I’d planned for but FUCK!”

My arm felt like it was on fire, I realized then that Kim had taken the liberty of stabbing me through the wrist with what could only be a silvered machete, pinning my arm to the floor. Dmitri brought down the entirety of his weight on my free arm while Kim pinned it to match, the bastard even put his badge on my forehead.

So there I was, arms pinned to the floor and sizzling, blinded by pain and agony and unable to do a damned thing about it. I looked up at Angel, trying to find words, thought, anything that I could muster to order her to release me and failing horribly.

She kneeled next to me as I continued to scream, brandishing a large knife.

The last things I could remember after the knife entered my chest was the sensation of being burned from the inside as two simple words drifted across my mind.

[I'm Sorry.]
